Abs Workouts That Will Produce Real Results

By Marian Partin

Abs workouts are among the most popular types of exercises of all. Whether the goal is to lose weight around the mid-section or get better definition, people tend to focus a great deal on the abdominal area. This proves to be challenging for most people, as they often work hard and don't see the desired results. You'll see more impressive results from your efforts if you stick to the following principles.

Exercise balls are very useful for many abdominal exercises. You've certainly seen these exercise balls at the gym, and they're easy to buy as well. They aren't expensive, and you can do many effective exercises with them in a short time. Make sure you get an exercise ball that's appropriate for your height and weight, as they come in several sizes. You can get better results from crunches when you do them on exercise balls. You simply lie on the ball with your arms behind your neck or crossed in front of you. The ball makes the exercise more challenging, which of course is the whole point.

Doing too many exercises for the abs can be as bad as doing too few. The idea that doing twice as many sets of something is going to yield twice the results isn't necessarily true. You can see people at the gym doing endless sets of crunches or sit-ups, which then leaves them little time or energy to do much else. Your abs, like any muscle group, need a certain amount of rest as well as working out and you can't neglect the rest of your body either. Doing strictly abs exercises also doesn't do much to help you shed pounds, which is necessary to make your ab muscles more visible. Your abs will do better in the long run if you give equal attention to all of your other muscle groups, as well as aerobic fitness.

One of the best things you can use for exercising is a mini trampoline. There are many reasons for this. Not only are they compact and portable, but they allow you to accomplish a great deal by doing a few simple exercises. When using a trampling, you are causing your core muscles to get quite a workout, along with your abs. When you have a strong back, and abdominal muscles that are exercised every day, your balance will be better, and you will be less prone to back injuries. Mini trampolines don't really replace other types of exercise, but jumping on one for even a few minutes every day can make a big difference in your results.

One exercise you shouldn't overlook for your abs is the plank. This is a strength building exercise for your whole core and is one well worth doing. This is an exercise you can do on the floor, an exercise mat or an exercise ball, starting in a face-down position. Raise your body up onto your toes and elbows, keeping your back and rear end flat. Try to stay relaxed as you hold the position for 10, 30 or even 60 seconds before coming down. If you can only stay up for a few seconds at first, that's fine as you'll quickly build up your endurance. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed by all the different systems and theories regarding abs workouts. To have the abs you want, you have to maintain a healthy weight, so make sure you follow a balanced and complete fitness program. Doing a few good basic abs exercises such as planks, crunches and the bicycle will do a lot for your abs, as long as you also have good eating habits.
