Why Finding Ways To Express Yourself Matters

By Kari Ratliff

There are two major aspects involved in finding ways to express yourself and they are very probably connected. Everyone knows that it is important to be able to communicate needs effectively to those around them and there is an almost endless supply of advice on how to develop skills to help you do this. Equally, most people want to be able to show the world what is important to them and to be able to contribute something that is uniquely of themselves. In finding a way to channel your inner self into your everyday life you will develop the effective communication that comes from self-belief.

Every person is unique but in the modern world it can appear as if the driving force is to suppress individuality and to regard people as interchangeable pieces to be fitted into societal needs. With the necessity to conform to the people around you it can be hard to find ways to express yourself.

If you are one of the fortunate few who from an early age shows artistic or musical abilities then it is likely that your loved ones will encourage you to develop your gifts. For the majority of people who fail to display early genius in a recognized area finding a means of self-expression may be more difficult.

Levels of self-confidence vary during the span of an individuals life. At some stage most people will find themselves in a situation that they are not happy with but have no immediate powers to change. In these circumstances it is normal for self-belief to be lowered. It is at these times that it is most important to find some time and space to do things that bring a degree of personal pleasure or satisfaction.

The way you are seen by your friends and family will influence the way you see yourself. The most valuable friends are those who show that they respect your individuality; treasure those around you who support you in your dreams and aspirations.

Your own attitude to undertaking new things will also have a major effect; fear of failure can easily become a reason for not trying. It has been suggested that people who take themselves too seriously are far less likely to be creatively successful than those who can learn to value the journey more than the arrival and who can accept set-backs with good humor and perspective.

There are many ways to express who you are; music, art or literature may be the obvious ones but lack of skills in any of these areas is really not important. Some people demonstrate their unique self in the way they raise their children; others find satisfaction in the way they decorate their home. A successful career in an field you love may provide an outlet for many of your needs whilst for some people their ability to offer support to their friends or contribute to the society around them may be the way in which they most truly show who they are.

You will be a happier person if you find ways to express yourself. You may not change the world or leave some unique legacy of artistic or musical merit but you will have the satisfaction of a life well lived and those around you will value you for your unique contribution to the world.
